The Work In Progress

Becoming Saffron

While taking Tap and Jazz classes as a 16 year old, it was my dream to own my own studio one day. Many times I got sidetracked from my dream, but I managed to keep dance in my life one way or another. Usually, by taking classes, teaching classes at someone else's studio or joining dance troupes.

Days before Katrina, my husband, (Richard) and I had a business plan put together and were scouting a location for our dream studio. Then disaster struck. We were the lucky ones who got to return to our home and jobs relatively quickly, but the dream had to be put on hold.

In 2007, the dream just kept bubbling up to the surface, stronger than ever before! I just knew that this is what I'm supposed to do! I had to do it or I wouldn't be able to rest in peace! Luckily, Richard agreed the timing was right! He jumped right in to provide MANY manhours of sweat and blood, along with my family, dear friends and fellow dancers to turn an old house into a cozy and inviting studio.

It was my dream to create a space where people would want to hang out before and after classes to get to know each other better and in turn enjoy taking classes with friends instead of strangers. I am happy to report that this happening on a regular basis...so much so, that sometimes I have to kick them out so I can go home and go to bed! Be careful what you ask for, right?!?! :)

I've been asked where did the name Saffron come from. I must admit, as most things happen in NOLA...over Mojito's at my dear friend Sally's house! The word Saffron made us think of warm and exotic places. The rich color of Saffron creates a cozy environment, it tastes great in food and it is one of the most expensive spices in the world. It is used in a variety of ethnic dishes which reflects the eclectic mix of classes at the Studio.

I would like to personally invite you to come to the studio to meet our fun and friendly teachers and enjoy a class that will help you forget any self-conciousness you may have about your body and/or dance and move amongst friends.

Warmly,
Shannon Wolfe
